  • Building Skills Together with a Buddy

This unique Occupational Therapy session is designed to enhance social interaction skills for two children with similar therapeutic goals, in a supportive, small-scale environment. This setup is especially beneficial for children who may experience shyness, social anxiety, or low confidence, as it allows them to connect and build friendships with a peer of their own age in a comfortable, low-pressure setting.

Held in a sensory-optimised space, the session offers activities tailored to sensory preferences, making it ideal for sensory seekers and sensory-sensitive kids alike. Goals are individually personalised and target a range of developmental areas, including:

    • Gross Motor Skills: Activities to improve coordination, strength, and balance.

    • Fine Motor Skills: Tasks to build hand strength, dexterity, and precise hand-eye coordination.

    • Self-Care Skills: Practicing age-appropriate self-care routines, such as dressing or grooming, to support independence.

    • Functional Academics: Simple academic skills, such as early literacy and numeracy, to support school readiness.

    • Reflex Integration: Exercises to support foundational movement patterns and improve motor planning and coordination.

Through engaging, structured activities, each child is encouraged to make individual progress while enjoying the support and companionship of a peer. This paired format fosters both skill-building and social confidence, helping children gain a positive sense of independence and peer connection.

    • School Readiness: Foundational activities are included to support language, following instructions, and focusing on tasks, giving children the tools they need for a smooth transition into a school setting.

In the Early Explorer Room, each child can explore, learn, and grow at their own pace, surrounded by peers in a supportive environment. This group encourages progress in milestone development and school readiness, helping each child build the confidence and skills needed for their next steps.

This may include a sensory assessment to provide an overview of your child’s sensory profile that may be influencing their behavioural responses.

We also offer a Functional Capacity Assessment report to provide a comprehensive functional status of your child’s capabilities including strengths and challenges. This comprehensive report is typically used as a tool to assist funding needs and is often requested by NDIS to ensure that appropriate funding is received.

Assessments

  • Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) for children evaluates their ability to perform everyday activities across key domains such as communication, self-care, motor skills, and socialisation. It provides a comprehensive overview of their strengths and challenges in relation to age-appropriate milestones.

    Why It’s Useful

    • Understanding Abilities: Identifies a child’s strengths and challenges in functional areas like communication, self-care, and mobility.

    • Guiding Interventions: Helps tailor therapeutic goals and strategies to support development and promote independence.

    • Involving Families and Educators: Equips caregivers and educators with actionable insights to implement supportive strategies in daily routines.

    • Promoting Participation: Ensures interventions focus on meaningful activities that enhance the child’s participation in home, school, and community environments.

    Why It’s Valuable for NDIS

    • Funding Applications: Provides objective, evidence-based information to support National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding requests for therapy, equipment, or other support.

    • Goal-Setting: Informs individualised NDIS plans by aligning funding with the child’s specific developmental needs and goals.

    • Tracking Progress: Establishes a baseline to measure improvements and reassess needs, ensuring ongoing support is aligned with changing requirements.

    • Holistic Support: Facilitates collaboration between therapists, families, and NDIS planners to ensure consistent and effective interventions.

Occupational therapists use FCA results to create personalised intervention plans, advocate for funding, and support the child’s functional development, supporting independence and meaningful participation in everyday life.

  • The Sensory Profile Assessment evaluates how your child processes sensory information (e.g., sound, touch, movement) and identifies patterns in their responses. It categorises behaviours into sensory sections (specific sensory systems like auditory or tactile) and quadrants (general patterns like seeking, avoiding, sensitivity, or registration).

    Why It’s Useful
Understanding Needs: Identifies if a child is overwhelmed, avoids, or craves sensory input.
Guiding Interventions: Provides insights for tailored strategies to support self-regulation, participation, and learning.
Therapeutic Focus: Enables occupational therapists to develop sensory-based activities, modify environments, and implement strategies to reduce frustration and enhance engagement.

The assessment is a valuable tool for your occupational therapists to design personalised plans that meet the child’s unique sensory and developmental needs, improving their ability to navigate daily activities effectively.
